Social Action- The Girl who fell From the Sky

I have recently finish reading, The Girl who Fell From the Sky by Heidi W. Durrow.  This book has an injustice example of society. There's discrimination in color  that can actually give an harsh example to the reader. There's also bullying which is not fair and makes the reader uncomfortable. The protagonist in this book that gets discriminated and bullied is Rachel. She has recently moved to New Orland's in a black community with her grandma as her guardian. Rachel has to deal with this and her family's tragedy. Rachel fights herself to hope.
Discrimination in color was and is a very huge trouble in society. In the early 19's this was one of the main issues in which blacks and whites got segregated. In this book however, Rachel gets discriminated by her eye color and her skin color. "I am light-skinned-ed. That's what the other kids say, and I talk white. I have blue eyes and I learn that black people don't." This obviously discrimination in color in which the protagonist, Rachel has to cling to hope to survive her epic issue. They call her white and make fun of her eyes because their blue. This can also make the reader uncomfortable in which I can connect, made me feel annoyed. Other people shouldn't judge others, we are all equal.
Rachel also has to suffer bullying in which she clinches to hope."Her name is Tamika Washington . She says I'm going to kick your ass. Sometimes she pulls my hair. In gym class she grabs my two braids." This shows bullying which can anger the reader. I think that the authors perspective by this quote is to show the reader different ways others get bullied, this also got me sick at how the bully her.
"My stomach tightens and my eyeballs get hot. I put all of that inside the bottle." Inside the bottle? This seems like Rachel is having critical issues when she gets bullied and discriminated. Also by the way she says,"my eyeballs get hot" means that she gets annoyed and angry. When she says," I put all of the that inside the bottle." It explains that she likes to  hide her feelings and not show them and since she doesn't cry she keeps all if the that in the bottle.
Overall, as I came up to all these issues in society like discrimination in color and bullying, this made me frustrated and made me think of others. Like I wouldn't want someone bullying someone this way, I wouldn't want to be discriminated by my race or color. I also came up to think that Rachel is as strong surviver and she fights herself to what she hopes for, like her family. The girl who fell from the sky made me realize and think about issues that are going on the world.

Social Action reading Question #1

Prophecy of the Sisters by Michelle Zink is a really touching book. It's about 2 twin sisters that are involved in a prophecy that will change their lives. One is good and one is evil. In this book Lia is the good one she is also the gate. Alice is the bad one and she's the guardian. This prophecy changes their lives. They have to end, Samuel the angel from crossing to the human plane. Lia is to find the 4 keys and she's powerful than Alice. However Alice is evil she would not let that happen, Samuel has summon her and she is to kill Lia. The end to this book is a mystery there's a second book to this. Who will win would Lia be strong enough and find the 4 keys to open the gate and fight Samuel? Or will Alice be powerful enough to be on Samuels side? Lias father found the 2 keys before he died. She needs the 2 other keys.
In this book I have noticed that there's a lot of fighting between siblings and jealousy . It's pretty obvious, since one is good and one evil. A brief example from the book is when Alice tries to steal the book(the one who tells the prophecy) of Lia. Alice is also desperate, she's selfish and wants the bad instead  of good. Lia also doesn't communicate with her like the used to they are enemies and want the best for them. When Alice also kills Henry(there brother) just for the list. This is cruel she only killed him for the list and she still didn't get what she wanted.
Prophecy of the sisters, is most of a prophecy however, it also shows the difficult ways siblings don't  get along, like fighting, jealousy, etc... Lia and Alice have it different, because they actually have to fight for the it, one will die and one will live. Neither of them want to die. So they have to separate each other and be enemies, they can't work in this together, it's a challenge between them and the prophecy.

Argument Essay

Teen fiction books are darker SO... We should the right to read whatever book we want even if it's too dark, fantasy,non-fiction, etc... Why are adults banning our lovely books that we enjoy reading? It's not like we're going to do the same thing the character does in the book. We won't just read a dark hunting book and then go slice our bellies noooo. How would we know what's going on in the world? In order for us to know what's going on in the world, there's these wonderful books that are supposedly giving us"cruel" examples of life.Adults do not understand.
Meghan Cox Gurdon gives an example of he book "Rage" by Jackie Morse," she had slice her arms to ribbons, but the badness remained, stunning her insides like cancer, she had gouge her belly until it was a mess of meat and blood, but she still couldn't breathe." Really? Gurdon gives an extremely stomach-clenching (as she would say to the reader). She only wants the reader to have a harsh idea of YA books Gurdon , even admits that, "reading about a homocide doesn't  turn a man into a murder, reading about cheating on exams won't make a kid break the honor code." This briefly means that a young adult wouldn't slice his arms or gouge his belly. Just by reading this book.
To add on, even librarians and booksellers agree that YA books are dark, however they have values in which gives a brief examples of what's going on their lives. Why the best books are written in blood by Sherman Alexie, states," I write books for teenagers because I vividly remember what it felt like to be a teen facing everyday and epic dangers." This explains why Alexie writes in blood because he cares about teens that are dealing with harsh situations, and since he went through the same thing when he was a teen he wants to teach the reader something that would help him face his problem. But not only face his problems by suiciding or cutting himself. He writes in blood give ideas that will help them fight the monster.
Overall banning books would not help the situation, because we love our books and we don't want adults taking them away. It's not fair and it's also not fair for teens who are actually dealing with a problem and not to have something to help him/her because him/her will not have a book to read about their problems because adults are banning the books. Adults banning our books should think about it. We also enjoy reading our dark books even if we are not dealing with it because we want to learn what oh her teens are dealing with at this time. We have the freedom to read whatever we want even if it's cruel and gives the reader a harsh example.

Teen Fiction plots are Darker and Starker by William Porter

Teen Fiction plots are darker and starker by William Porter, supports and claims that YA books can be darker HOWEVER teens can explore YA books and use them to deal with issues in their lives.
Librarians and booksellers said, “even pitch-black books such as “Wintergirls”, a chilling look at teen anorexia, HAVE VALUE.” This supports and explains that books are not completely DARK, they have some value that helps teens deal with issues going through their lives. A quote from Jill Adams says, “it reflects whatever’s going on their lives.” This basically means that YA books or most of them are dark stuff about teen lives?...I don’t think so but I also agree because these days SOME not ALL teens are dealing with this dark stuff. Like me I’m not dealing with this dark stuff. The authors probably think that ALL teens are dealing with this but their wrong because some aren’t.
Shelly Wilhemof the Bookies, a Denver bookseller said, “as kids, they want fantasy, but when they enter their teens, they want more realistic and darker books because they’re struggling with those issues and ideas.” I truly agree with this, me as a teen I want more realistic books on what’s going on in the world. Not fantasy books, I wouldn’t want to read a childish book.
The author even said, “dark as these books can be, they tend to be leavened by REDEMPTIVE endings.” Dark books are not just evil books that poisoned our mind. They leave saving someone from evil or terror as the word redemptive means. In the article it also states that, “adults find these books interesting with great literature."However, we the teens not adults understand more than adults do because those dark books are written about teens.
Overall, William Porter point’s that YA books are not bad they teach us and give us useful stuff that we are going through. I truly agree with William Porter he convinced me with great details and the way he supported his claim. They should not consider YA books evil that “SUPPOSEDLY” give us cruel examples of dark stuff.

Faithful Elephants by Yukio Tsuchiya

Faithful Elephants by Yukio Tsuchiya is a tragical, sorrowful story about 3 lovely elephants. It takes place on a Zoo in Japan. Cherry blossoms petals are falling like rain drops, an employee of the Zoo starts telling a tragical story. There was a War going on at that time, and the commander of the Army declared all animals from the Zoo to be killed. John was a very clever elephant, he loved potatoes. John had to be killed so the zoo keeper poisoned some potatoes. However, whenever he brought a poisoned potatoe to his mouth he threw it to the ground. They had no choice but to starve him to death after they tried to inject poison with a big needle, but the needle split in half on John's skin. John died 17 days later. Next, were Tonky and Wanly's turn. These two elephants were very sweet and gentle hearted. The zoo keepers loved them so much, that they planned on sending them to Sendai. But what if bombs fall there too? Tonky and Wanly had to be starve to death too, they died two weeks later.
Faithful Elephants, shows to have hope/faith. In the story when John is given poisoned potatoes he doesn’t eat them, it’s as if he knows or smells the poison. It’s amazing how John’s skin is so hard like a rock that the needles split in half. This quote from the story is a very heartbroken part,” as the days passed, the elephants became thinner and weaker. Whenever a keeper walked by their cage, they would stand up, tottering as if to beg give us something to eat. Please give us water. Their loving eyes became to look like rubber balls in their dropping, shrunken faces.” This quote is very strong. It also shows that not even the littlest strength they had made them loose hopes, they begged for food and water.
When the author said, “their eyes look like round rubber balls in their drooping shrunken faces.” This is a really tragical moment. I really thought that the zoo keepers were cruel, because how can they have those poor pitiful elephants hungry and thirsty.
However, when I read this quote, “all this while, the elephant’s trainer loved them so much as if they were his own children. He would pace in front of the cage and moan, you poor, poor, pitiful elephants!” I knew right away that the zoo keeper wasn’t cruel he loved them as much as his own children. When the author said “pacing in front of the cage” this made me think what if the zoo keeper has hope and wants to save them and its thinking about a plan or something? Even when the elephants did their Banzai trick, and the zoo keeper dashed for food and water and he said, “eat your food and water” as he was clung to their legs and sobbing. This also meant he loved them so much.
A very important quote from the story was, “everyone was hoping and praying, that the elephants could survive only one more day, the war might be over and the elephants would be saved.”This proves that that the zoo keepers and the elephants had hope it even says it in this quote. The zoo keepers loved them very much.
Overall, hope and faith was what the zoo keepers and the elephants had. This story was a very touching and heartbroken story. I never taught that innocent animals can be involved in war that would cause them to die like that.
